DVD

A unique and almost whimsical look at the life of legendary song writer, Bob Dylan.  With six different actors portraying six different fantastical interpretations of Dylan’s life, each with ties to one of his songs and/or different times in his life.  The real star of the show is of course the soon to be classic and award-nominated performance by the ever-capable Cate Blanchette.

With the art-house film style and a bit of Andy Warhol thrown in as well, I’m Not There is one of the most unique films to come along in a while.  Inter cutting between each story and style, color and emotion, the actors perform their parts to perfection and the whimsy is blatant and unapologetic.  This will also be remembered as one of the late Heath Ledger’s last films, and what a great performance by the Australian phenom.  Christian Bale is a strange choice here, but turns out to be one of the most memorable of the six that get screen time.

With plenty of classic songs, stock Vietnam War footage, political riots, and Presidential addresses, the backdrop is set for the story and the drama that was the 1960’s and 70’s.  The story follows Dylan’s many facets and career changes yet never gets bogged down in the drama, as do most musical biopics.  Many of the lines delivered by the various incarnations of Bob Dylan were taken directly from actual interviews and press conferences, we are getting a surreal visiion of the man grounded in reality.

I’m Not There is the most unique biographical picture to come along in a while. Entertaining, fun, and often abstract, the film will take you on the journey filled with ups and downs, soulful music and political upheaval.  Though not everyone’s cup of tea, this film is sure to entertain and mildly inform, cut together in a way that keeps the pace moving and feels like a trip inside the mind of a genius.
