I must confess that I had very high expectations going in to see this film, what with all of the fanfare surrounding the performance of the now legendary Daniel Day-Lewis. With lots of dark, almost black humor, the film simply IS Mr. Lewis, from beginning to end. He steals every scene, even though he is surrounded by considerable talent, mainly in the form of Paul Dano as the local pastor. The story is the conflict of interests and morals of a self-made millionaire oily tycoon and a preacher, and the drama is well played on every count. They truly do hate one another but are just too noble to show it in rash and immature ways, to a point.
The story takes its time getting going, but this one is not to be rushed, the drama needs time to simmer, and the comedy needs to pop, and pop it does. It sizzles and cracks like hot oil. Easily one of the best films of the year, There Will Be Blood is for serious film fans, not something for a casual viewing. Highly recommended!
