In Theatres

Well summer is here and it is time for Will Smith to wow us with his most recent (literal in this case) block buster, this time in the form of Hancock, the super hero that is beyond all levels of reluctance.  While the movie has its charms, most notably in the first half while Hancock is a sleazy and irreverent superhuman, the movie sort of lost me in the second half.

For those who have seen the film, you know what I am talking about,  the useless “twist” and the somewhat rehearsed back story assigned to his superness.  I didn’t need to know his back story, and he really didn’t need that enormous character arc either, I was satisfied with him being a homeless, drunken superhero that no one loved, and just plain didn’t care.  The first act was genuinely funny, and Jason Bateman was in top form as always, and Charlize Threon was passable at best.

I did enjoy the movie, but overall I felt that such an original and fresh idea became weighted down near the end and became epic far too quick, it outgrew itself in a hurry. Still an enjoyable, and competent action adventure, comic bokkish film.  I must say that this is Will’s best work since Independence Day, but then again there hasn’t been a lot of substance since ID.
