Movie Title: Flawless
DVD Release Date: June 2008
Starring: Demi Moore and Michael Caine
Flawless gets off to kind of a slow start as Demi Moore’s character, Laura Quinn, begins to recount her life of forty years past. Quinn is the only female manager at a large diamond corporation in 1960’s London. She gets passed over for promotion after promotion, but resolves to work even harder. Michael Caine plays Mr. Hobbs, a janitor at the company. Hobbs tells Quinn that he has overheard that she is to be fired. She confirms the suspicion when she does some digging and finds a memo discussing her imminent dismissal. Quinn also learns that because of some office politics, the company has sullied her reputation, rendering her unable to work for any other company in London with which they have a relationship. It is then that Quinn and Hobbs begin their partnership. Hobbs has a plan but requires her help to execute it. The plot takes an odd turn when the jewel thievery turns into a jewelry-held-hostage situation, and Hobbs’ true motives are revealed.
Let us also not ignore the threads of social and political commentary which are evident in the movie. The plot is actually deeper than it seems, and includes underlying statements about unfair health insurance company practices, sexism and classism.
Demi Moore is just as beautiful and talented as ever in Flawless. It has been a while since I have seen a good jewel thief movie and this one was intelligent and entertaining, though somewhat subdued. I would recommend it; it was unusual and thought-provoking.
