Ever wondered what would happen if you still lived at home when you were 40? And what if your mum marries a guy who also has a 40 year old son who still lives at home too and you have to live together? Well that’s the premise for Will Ferrell and John C Reilly’s latest pairing “Step Brothers”.
Obviously the Judd Apatow stable is producing this so it gives you an idea of what to expect, plenty of swears, jokes about bodily functions and an awful lot of shouting. It felt like this idea had come from Ferrell and Reilly sitting around together during Taladega Nights, improvising the whole film because all of the scenes and the editing feel quite rough and ready.
Highlights includes:
- The “nut sack on the drum kit” scene
- Ferrell and Reilly’s first night in the same bedroom together trying to out-do each other
- Reilly’s first encounter with the wife of his step brother
- This is a comedy with extreme swearing which is becoming a rarity as the filmmakers strive for that PG-13 audience
In general it’s not a classic comedy but I laughed quite a bit, the pairing of Ferrell and Reilly clearly works and there’s more than enough here to enjoy. Also, it’s always nice to see Mary Steenburgen as I thought she was dead. And compared to their comedic rivals of Sandler, Murphy, Carrell or Carrey… they clearly still know what’s funny.
This just affirms that Judd Apatow is the new Landis / Hughes in Hollywood.

globellied, the way that I understand this is that the whole movie is the brain child of these two guys. I have to say that most the movies they do together is about bodily noises. Another one that I can just wait till it hits the movie channels
