7 reasons I liked ‘Mirrors’

1. Kiefer Sutherland’s no longer Jack “Where’s the bomb?!?!” Bauer but a mid-life-crisis-ey security guard who gets a job at a charred department store and must fight the demon in the mirrors. It’s nice to see Kiefer again.

2. Children might die. So few horror movies have the guts to ever place children in harm’s way. ‘Mirrors’ gives you the impression that you might see one of the cute kids’ throats slit at any time, which makes it scarier and more upsetting.

3. It’s actually a decent mystery. I was worried “Mirrors” was just going to be a foray into excessive gore, which it is. But director Alexander Aja offers up a decent story, in addition to all the splatter.

4. Amy Smart getting her jaw ripped off. It’s sick, it’s scary, it’s a shame it’s Amy Smart because she seems like a really nice person. Actress I would have liked to have seen this happen to: Renee Zelleweger. Pucker those lips now, Renee! You don’t have a jaw!

5. It’s scary. It’s not always scary, but when Kiefer’s working night detail and he’s all alone and he finds a screaming burn victim in the closet, it makes you uneasy.

6. It’s just not all that good. And I mean that as mild praise. It doesn’t entirely make sense, some of its performances are pretty subpar and it’s really just another rehash of the J Horror principle (”something spooky’s going on and we have to solve a mystery!”). But its pleasures are quick, cheap and dirty. And Amy Smart rips her jaw off. And I was never less than entertained for every second of my late Friday afternoon viewing.

7. There’s a demonically possessed old lady who climbs ceilings in this film.

I saw this movie last night… Movies rarely make me jump, but this movie had me jumping and my girlfriend cutting off circulation to my arm lol. I enjoyed most of the movie, the ending got a little out of control, but I was very entertained… So the movie did it’s job.
