Movie: Dan in Real Life
DVD Release Date: March 2008
Dan in Real Life is a sappy but sweet movie about a widower learning to love again and also learning to effectively cope with raising his three daughters. Steve Carell, who plays “Dan,” is consistently funny in his usual style. The character evokes the viewer’s sympathy; he has great intentions and cares deeply for his family, but is not necessarily appreciated for it.
The film has some corny moments, such as when Dan and and the lead female character “Marie” (played by Juliette Binoche) meet and begin falling in love; music is played while you see them talking and laughing, but most of the conversation itself is omitted. This is something which I find particularly bothersome in movies. There are also several scenes in which the entire extended family is playing charades or singing by the piano. (I think this is something that happens only in movies. If you, reader, have ever experienced such a scene in your own family, please comment and let me know!)
In this movie though, the cheesy scenes actually work to its favor and contribute to the overall vibe of the film. It is a fairly innocent, “feel-good” type of movie.
