Batman (1966) Review - Better Than “The Dark Knight”

Plot holes! Terrible acting! Cheap looking!

Best. Movie. Ever.

This is one of the best movie-going experiences I have ever had. I laughed through the whole movie and when I thought I finally had enough of the camp and cheese, something crazy happened that made me snort-laugh.

Adam West and Co. definitely knew they were making a comedy. 100%. For example, Batman and Robin are flying their Bat-Copter trying to land on a moving yacht. Batman says, “Lower the Bat-Ladder” which is already funny because everything has ‘bat’ in front of it. Anyway, Robin lowers it – it’s just a rope ladder – and camera pans down revealing a sign at the bottom which reads “Bat Ladder”! Why would you put that there!? Only for the laugh. They totally know it’s a comedy.

I feel hindered by this stupid internet, because the way I want to tell you about the movie is by excitedly telling my favourite scenes to you…like I just did. Here are some more!

There was this one scene where the Penguin dehydrates his henchmen in order to sneak them into the Batcave but they are not rehydrated properly and they kinda puff out of existence and Robin says to Batman “Do you think they’ll come back?” and Batman says “Not…in this…universe.”

Oh! And there was this other scene where Batman is running around trying to get rid of a huge bomb but he encounters nuns and babies and kissing lovers and can’t find a place to dispose of it and when most frustrated, he says, “some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb!”

Oh! And there was this one time when Batman and Robin are being torpedoed by the Penguin but the camera cuts away just before the explosion but then it cuts to the dynamic duo safe and sound in their jet boat and Batman says something like, “we owe our lives to that noble porpoise who selfless jumped in front of the torpedo,” or something like that!

As you can tell, I am pretty excited about it.

I happened to see it in a theatre – yay, local rep cinemas! – but there was a July 1st, 2008 release on DVD and Blu-Ray. It is a 42nd anniversary edition but mutterings tell me it is the same as the 35th anniversary edition with a new front cover. So beware.

What’s the plot, you ask? Who cares! You’re not renting this movie for plot! If you appreciate the wackiness of the Batman TV show, and if you love Adam West for the right reasons, you will love Batman: The Movie.
