The Comebacks was originally released in October of 2007. It is a spoof of all the inspiration football movies that have been put out such as Gridiron Game and Friday Night Lights. This comedy is directed by none other than Tom Brady. How fitting is that.
What you have here is the most pathetic coach in the history of football. His job is simple. Take a bunch of rag tag college football players and win. Problem is, he does not know how. All he knows is
how to lose. Lambeau Fields (David Koechner) lives the middle class life in America with his wife Barb (Melora Hardin) and their knock out of a daughter, Michelle (Brooke Nevin). To show how messed up Fields is, he has raised Michelle as his son.
Lambeau has resided to the fact that he sucks as a head coach and has given up on his dream of being a football coach. The one day his friend Freddie Wiseman (Carl Weathers) convinces him to take the opening at Heartland State University. Fields decides to take another shot and relocates his family to Plainfolk in Texas.
When he arrives, he is met by the misfits of football, the Comebacks. It is then that he decides to go out and find some new players. This is when he finds his new kicker and quarterback. The kicker, Jizminder (Noureen DeWulf), agrees to play if Fields can keep it from her family. The quarterback, Lance Thurman (Matthew Lawrence, best known for his role as Jack in Boy Meets World), has his own stories to tell as he was raised to be a tom-girl by his drag queen father.
Lambeau’s task is to get his team to the Toilet Bowl. It is quite fitting as he attempts to once again flush his career down it. His life starts to unravel and he looses it all and goes to jail. This is when he finds out that he was set up by his friend Freddie. Freddie knew that he would fail. It is at this point that Fields has to turn it around.
The rest is for you to find out. I will leave you with this thought. All the football movie where fair game in this. Any Given Sunday, Rudy, Gridiron Gang, The Program, and Friday Night Lights all take their shots.
