Is it me or are there no original ideas for films anymore?

Just look at this summer… nearly all sequels, book adaptations or blatant rip-offs of better older films.

The majority of the great actors and directors out there are living off former glories (see DePalma, DeNiro, Pacino, Scorcese, Lucas and Spielberg for starters)

It’s down to people like Christian Bale, Chris Nolan and the folk at Pixar to show that there is still talent in Hollywood that constantly raises the bar.

I’ve been thinking this for a couple of years now but after sitting through Step Brothers (not a patch on Anchorman) and Mummy 3 (not a patch on the original but better than Indy) I’ve simply had enough.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Sturgeon's Law says that 90% of everything is crap.  I first heard that not from Sturgeon, but from one of my fim professors, who said that in any age, 90% of everything is schlock and will pass away.  Only 10% will endure… and then we have to study it in college. 

I think tha't true.  Think of any summer film season.  Most of what's out there is the same old stuff, but every now and then something truly good, even great, comes along.
