It's generally accepted that when a book is made into a movie, the book is always better.  I'm not sure that's always true, though.  Some examples that come to mind where the movie was better than the book are The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind.

Any others?

I think that both Fight Club and the Lord of the Rings films fit the bill on these. A lot of the fluff was cut and the story was more visiblr and coherent.  Good topic!
